God Grew Tired Of Us is a story of refugees. Although not directly about the environment, with the negative effects of climate change increasing, the number of refugees is expected to climb as resources become scarcer and conflict over water, oil and food intensifies. Environmental refugees are expected to increase to an estimated 150 million by 2050.
God Grew Tired Of Us is the story of the Sudanese Lost Boys, told through the experiences of three men — Daniel Abol Pach, Pather Blor and John Bul Dau. The film begins with an explanation of how the Sudanese conflict over religion and oil created a bloody civil war between the north and south. The Northern Sudanese government targeted male children in the North for ethnic cleansing and thousands of boys (ages three to thirteen) fled barefoot to avoid slaughter or enforced sterilization.
The Lost Boys (nicknamed by a journalist after Peter Pan’s orphans who protected and cared for each other), numbering an estimated 27,000 starting walking to Ethiopia across the sub-Sahara desert seeking refuge. For a few years they found sanctuary in Ethiopia, but when the government toppled in 1991, the Lost Boys started walking again, back through the Sudan to Kenya. In 1992, when they arrived in Kenya, after a five-year exodus and after walking more than 1000 miles, their numbers were reduced to only 12,000.
God Grew Tired Of Us is a rare film, achingly beautiful, bitterly poignant, and surprisingly enough, often very funny.
The Lost Boys spent the next ten years in the Kenya Kakuma Refugee camp. Daniel Abol Pach, Pather Blor and John Bul Dau are three of the 3,800 Lost Boys selected to relocate to the USA. Filmmaker Christopher Quinn follows the men for three years as they adjust to life in the USA and struggle to find ways to give back to their friends and family in Africa.
God Grew Tired Of Us is a rare film, achingly beautiful, bitterly poignant, and surprisingly enough, often very funny. Christopher Quinn manages to tell a compelling story about a painful subject while respecting the dignity of the people and humanizing refugees into a gentle, honest portrayal that will touch anyone who watches this film.
