In 2007, melamine, a chemical used in plastics and fertilizers, found its way into the North American pet food supply and thousands of cats and dogs got sick. Many animals also died. The result was the largest pet food recall in North American history. Now, the pet food industry is finally getting the scrutiny it deserves. Pet owners want to know if there is enough regulation and can the pet food industry ever be trusted again.

Pet Food: A Dog’s Breakfast, directed by Ian McLeod, is an in-depth look at the behind the scenes reality of the $16 billion dollar pet food industry. The shocking pet food story is told through personal experiences of pet owners who lost their pets because of the poisoned products and veterinaries that unequivocally state the need for tougher pet food regulations.

With one company – Menu Foods – making 1/3 of all the wet and dry pet food sold in North America – there is a dominion effect when something goes wrong. “Pet owners would be shocked if they knew what was going into the cans they feed their pets,” explains Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins, an American veterinarian, and advocate for better pet food regulations.

Menu Foods, five of the top pet food companies, and the pet food industry association, all refused to be interviewed for the film.

“The recall should signal to all of us that there is a systemic problem in the pet food industry –at the heart is the lack of regulation,” she explains. Hodgkins worked in the pet food industry before opening her private veterinary practice in California. “The pet food industry is not a truthful industry,” she explains.

Feeding your animal commercial pet food is worse than feeding your children only pizza for their entire life.

Pet Food: A Dog’s Breakfast highlights that North American packaged and canned pet food is lacking in sufficient regulation, healthy ingredients and nutritional value. Feeding your animal commercial pet food is worse than feeding your children only pizza for their entire life, reports one veterinarian.

An extremely well made wake-up call for pet owners. If you have an animal companion – you must see this film.
