Hijacked Future, directed by David Springbett, is a documentary look at the fragile system of North American food production. The film warns us that our food security has been ‘hijacked’ by multi-nationals that will stop at nothing to totally dominate the world’s food supply from field to plate.
There are currently over 100,000,000 hectares of genetically modified crops around the world. Ten companies control 55% of the global commercial seeds market. By making seeds reliant on specific pesticides, corporations realized huge profits; sales of agricultural chemicals have tripled in the last ten years.
They are stealing the heritage of mankind and selling it back to us at a hell of a profit, explains Terry Boehm, a farmer in Saskatchewan. In North America, unlike Europe, there are no laws requiring food labelling for genetically modified foods.
In addition to the genetically modified seeds and compatible pesticide products, our food system is totally reliant on oil – from the pesticides and fertilizers, to the oil to run machines and transport the food long distances. North America uses so much oil that it now takes about 1,000 litres of oil to grow food on 1 hectare of land in North America. One scientist describes our food system as stretching from oil fields on one end to drive through restaurants on the other end.
Through interviews with seed savers in Ethiopia, organic farmers in Canada and the Minister of Environment at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, Hijacked Future reminds us that whoever controls the food controls the world.
Brilliant and riveting. A must see for any person who is concerned about the world’s food security. In fact, a must see for anyone who eats food.
