A Review of Fierce Light

Fierce Light: Where Spirit Meets Action, is the second film in the spiritual trilogy from filmmaker Velcrow Ripper. Fierce Light is a documentary look at the global spiritual activism movement that is revolutionizing the way we work for change. Sparked by what Gandhi called "soul force," and Martin Luther King called "love in action”, Ripper travels the globe to discover what moves people to activism.

Told through a series of interviews and visits to various activist actions around the globe, the filmmaker questions what happens when spirit meets action and sleeping volcanoes awaken. This spiritual movement of activism and community-based actions that are occurring around the world are being called the earth’s immune response to a planet in crisis.

There are interviews with activists from Vietnam, Africa, New Zealand, America, India and Thailand who discuss how to maintain their equilibrium, their peace and dignity, in times of conflict. The universal answer seems to be through love.

The filmmaker also visits various demonstrations, festivals, political actions and healing ceremonies to find where the light in all of us resides. Revolutions and insights are in the form of a costumed dirty angel that appears in the middle of a bloody conflict, a young woman who chooses to dance in her gasmask amongst a rain of teargas because it was the only thing that could make her feel free. Each individual interviewed and each conflict investigated shows how the pulse of spirituality and activism only continues to grow stronger around the world.

Ripper visits the annual Protest to Shut Down The School of Americas; the Parihaka Peace Festival with the Maori people in New Zealand; the Pak Moon Dam, Thailand where locals choose to pray to defend their land after is has been flooded by a World Bank dam project; and the Nevada Nuclear Test Site where Indians stand together with people from around the world, working together to heal their sacred lands from nuclear testing.

An uplifting spiritual kaleidoscope of hope and joy.
