Birth As We Know It Review

Birth As We Know It, directed by Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova, continues to be one of the most gentle and informative films on conscious conception, pregnancy and birth available. Although at times feeling somewhat dated, the film still carries a relevant message today.

The quality of life is defined by the quality of the birth, explains the narrator to the film. Birth As We Know It explores what happens when women (and men) consciously prepare for the act of birth. “I cannot over-emphasize the difference it makes,” explains narrator and director Vladimirova.

Birth As We Know It explores the possibilities of a beautiful, peaceful, supportive birth. Contrasted with a more institutionalized birthing experience, the film demonstrates, without blame, the difference between various forms of birthing.

Although there is a growing movement to reclaim the birthing experience back from hospitals, many women attempt different forms of birthing while neglecting to approach the birth as sacred and something that should be done consciously. When the entire process from conception to birth is revered and created consciously, the results are that women give birth peacefully and lovingly to their babies. Peace in the womb, peace in the world, explains the film.

Since 1982, Russian born director Vladimirova has been involved in teaching about natural delivery and birth trauma release. She has travelled throughout the U.S. teaching 'Birth Into Being' workshops that often lead to ecstatic birth experiences for both parents. “The birth itself is the last accord in this fascinating journey of self discovery", says Vladimirova, “After all preparation is accomplished, the delivery of the baby unfolds naturally in all it’s magnificence”.

Birth As We Know It is an important contribution to the natural birthing movement, encouraging mothers and fathers to see the experience of creating and birthing a baby as a sacred experience that is completely within their ability to manifest.

A must see film for every woman who is considering getting pregnant and giving birth.
