If you live in New York City, mark November 13th, 2009 on your calendar, as there is a special screening of the documentary film The Tiger Next Door at the Margaret Mead Film Festival.
The Tiger Next Door is a compelling documentary film that tells the story of a man named Dennis Hill who has been breeding, and selling tigers from his backyard in Flat Rock, Indiana for over fifteen years. The Tiger Next Door follows him – exploring his motives, his past, and the curious, ethically murky world he’s created in his backyard. At the same time, the film ranges far beyond Dennis’ animal compound, illuminating the connection between breeders like Hill, and the near epidemic of wild animal keeping in the United States.
It is a shocking reality that in twenty-one American states, and some parts of Canada, it is legal to own a tiger, bear, lion, cougar, or other large wild animals. As a result, experts estimate there are more tigers — living in small cages eating frozen turkey — in the US than there are roaming wild in the world.
