Filmmaker Michael Moore

Michael Moore wants you to vote and he is willing to give away his new film - Slacker Uprising - for free to encourage you to go to the polls. Slacker Uprising had its online release this week.

You may ask yourself – what the hell does Slacker Uprising have to do with the environment? Well, good question. Both Canada and the USA are going to the polls over the next few months to choose federal governments. These elections are imperative to the planet. Numerous groups (bipartisan or otherwise) and individuals are trying to encourage North Americans to vote. In Canada, the majority of the pro-voter movement is encouraging Canadians to vote for the environment.

Back to Slacker Uprising... This is the first time in history people are legally able to download a feature length film for free. Neither Moore nor Brave New Films (the film distributor) stand to make any money from the film, which had a production budget of $2 million. "This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans," writes Moore. "The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think 'Slacker Uprising' will inspire million to get off the couch and give voting a chance."

You can visit slackeruprising.com to watch the film or you can download it. Actually, you can pretty much do anything you want with it.

I'm giving you my blanket permission to not only download it, but also to email it, burn it, and share it with anyone and everyone (in the U.S. and Canada only). I want you to use Slacker Uprising in any way you see fit to help with the election or to do the work that you do in your community. You can show my film in your local theater, your high school classroom, your college auditorium, your church, union hall or community center. You can broadcast it on TV, on cable access, on regular channels or on the web. It's completely free -- I don't want to see a dime from this. In other words -- it's yours!
—Michael Moore

The film documents Moore’s journey four years ago to convince millions of non-voting "slackers” -- mostly between the ages of 18-29 -- to give voting a try. Starting out in Elk Rapids, Michigan, in front of an audience of 400, the tour caught on with up to 16, 000 slackers coming each night to see Moore and his traveling gang.

To encourage the slackers to show up, they were offered a clean change of underwear, Ramen noodles, and a promise that no event would start before noon and no politician would be allowed to speak. These enticements filled basketball arenas and football stadiums every night on the Slacker Uprising Tour.

Slacker Uprising is a look at the new political generation in America - the generation of young people who helped make Obamania possible. And hopefully the generation of young people who will elect green North American leaders.
