I Am Not A Paper Cup

A reusable coffee cup will probably not change the world single-handedly but it will make a serious dent in your personal waste, and save a few trees in the bargain. Unfortunately, many of the major take-out coffee franchises are extremely slow to green their java.

Imagine if you have a take out coffee five times a week for about forty weeks out of the year, you are generating more than 200 throwaway coffee cups each year. If you imagine that the majority of North Americans are drinking at least one or two take out coffees each week, the result is an estimated 3.7 million pounds of solid waste generated each year just from disposable coffee cups. Add in the trees needed for the paper cups plus the petroleum needed to create the plastic lids and it quickly becomes apparent what an incredibly wasteful and unnecessary enterprise disposable coffee cups are.

Styrofoam coffee cups are particularly hard on the environment. They take much longer to decompose in the landfill, have little or no recycling infrastructure and are made from petroleum – a non-renewable resource.

However, you can still enjoy your take out coffee without all the waste. Consider, the funky and funny, ‘I Am Not A Paper Cup’ reusable coffee mug, a 100% non-toxic, thermal coffee mug made from porcelain with a silicone lid. The ‘I Am Not A Paper Cup’ reusable coffee cup holds an eight-ounce coffee, equivalent to a ‘tall’ or ‘small’ coffee. The cup is both dishwasher and microwave safe.

Don’t forget to ask for a discount when bringing your own mug to a coffee shop. Most cafés will give a small discount with a BYO (bring your own) mug; after all, the coffee store is saving on supplies and garbage disposable costs.
