Kimberly-Clark has developed a Scott Naturals Tube-Free toilet tissue product, eliminating the cardboard tube and adhesive, which is a first for the US$9 billion (€6.47billion) toilet tissue market. According to Kimberly-Clark, 17-billion toilet tissue tubes are used in the US every year, totaling 160 million pounds (72,574 metric tons) of waste, equivalent to 250 Boeing 747s.
Though the inner tube can be recycled, around 85% of the cardboard tubes are thrown into the garbage. Switching to the new tube-free toilet paper is a no brainer for those consumers who want to be just that little bit greener, though this first version does not use recycled paper. Eliminating the plastic wrapper would probably have wider environmental ramifications though.
Kimberly-Clark sells in over 150 countries to a quarter of the world’s population so its actions can have a big impact on the environment.
