The Story of Electronics by Annie Leonard.

There is simply no stopping Annie Leonard. The creator of the 20-minute online video sensation The Story of Stuff (viewed more than 12 million times) continues to raise awareness, in simple language and images, about the problems with bottled water, cap and trade, cosmetics, and now electronics and e-waste.

The Story of Electronics by Annie Leonard.

Just in time for the holiday buying season, her latest project is the eight minute animated movie The Story of Electronics: Why “Designed for the Dump” is Toxic for People and the Planet, created in conjunction with Electronics TakeBack Coalition (ETBC) and Free Range Studios.

The movie explains the ugly reality of electronics including planned obsolescence, toxic chemicals in production, and the more than 25 million tons of exported e-waste that ends up in Third World countries. Leonard’s latest online film takes on the electronics industry’s “design for the dump” mentality while championing product take-back to spur companies to make less toxic, more easily recyclable and longer lasting products.

“The truth is we are never going to just shop our way out of this problem because the choices at the stories are limited by the choices of designers and policy makers outside of the store,” explains Leonard. “That’s why we need to join with others to demand stronger laws on toxic chemicals and banning e-waste exports.”
