Hewlett-Packard’s new Ecolabel-certified certified Lithium-ion batteries provide a longer, greener-life, for PC notebook users. The Enviro batteries are available for 18 of their PC notebook models.

The batteries use Sonata cells from Boston Power Inc., a start-up battery maker that has developed a lithium-ion battery that can last for 1,000 charging cycles without degrading, reports ComputerWorld.

Their Sonata Li-ion battery cells are the first-of-its-kind to achieve the environmental certification and promise to deliver a sustainable performance for three years – an estimated three times longer than most other notebook computer batteries. HP is also providing a three-year warranty on the batteries – an industry first.

Boston-Power is the first battery-maker whose rechargeable Li-ion battery cells have earned the Nordic Ecolabel certification.

“The Enviro Series program gives PC users longer lasting batteries that improve their computing experience while reducing the number of batteries that need to be recycled,” explained Jonathan Kaye, director of consumer notebooks marketing at HP.

The batteries don’t contain VC (Vinyl Chloride) plastic or toxic flame  retardants and practically no heavy metals.
