Isabelle Garbani collects discarded plastic bags and knits them into fashion accessories for trees. The young artist has been accepting plastic bag donations (every weekend from 12am-5pm) on Governors Island in New York City and has been diligently transforming the garbage into an environmental statement.
Considering that more than 1 million plastic bags are used every minute around the globe, Garbani hopes her Knit for Trees' project can raise awareness about the magnitude of the plastic problem.

“What then is the best way to fight this ecological disaster and at the same time acknowledge the futility of the task? Use plastic bags as yarn to knit sweaters, scarves and mittens for trees,” explains the artist’s website. “Knit for Trees is a metaphor for the way we treat our environment: our clean up efforts are superficial and ineffective, because we are unwilling or unable to make the necessary, fundamental changes.”
The Knit For Trees’ installation is open to the public on Governors Island until September 24, 2011.
