Illegal alcoholic drinks banned by the US Food and Drug Administration, such as Four Loko, are being recycled into ethanol to put in your gas tank rather than your stomach. The US FDA banned caffeinated malt beverages last November (2010) because the combined stimulants led to accidents and deaths, with as many as 30 different products being banned and withdrawn from public consumption.
Cases of unsold Four Loko are being sent to MXI Environmental Services (Abingdon, Southwest Virginia) and two other recycling plants to recycle it into ethanol for mixing with gasoline, to produce E85 gas and ethanol mix. Each truck delivery can hold 2,000 cases of the 23.5-ounce drink, which equates to about 367 US galloons (1,390 liters) with a 6 to 12% alcohol content.
The alcohol is distilled from the drink and recycled, along with the aluminum can, cardboard packaging and shipping pallets.
This is a good example of recycling, rather than just dumping the unsellable product into a landfill, almost all of it will be recycled and end up reducing transportation emissions as E85, and re-used as aluminum cans and waste paper products.
