Crafty In Motion is a French film company that works with found objects to create popular short films. What initially started as a bit of a lark (i.e. how to make films without a camera or an actor), has proven to be an incredibly popular alternative and sustainable filming style.
We caught up with Crafty in Motion creator Marc Edelmann to ask a few questions about his cardboard filmic creations.
Tell us about Crafty in Motion.
I originally created Crafty In Motion in 2008 with the idea to combine business with pleasure. Initially it was bit of a joke: how to make a film without an actor or without a camera? A very large company had commissioned a film with a very sophisticated scenario, but without adequate budget. I gave myself the challenge to only use the objects that were around me, on my desk: paper, paper clips, adhesive, ... pencils and a compact digital camera. The finished result was very popular and, since then, other films have been ordered based on the same filmmaking principles. The style Crafty In Motion was born.
Why use cardboard?
The cardboard, it can simply raise serious issues, to illustrate complex phenomena with humor and also contains the excitement of being both a learning and teaching object.
How many people are involved?
Today we work in teams with the same principles as traditional film shooting, but we work simply and with fewer resources.
We also use a network of partner companies for specific tasks such as sound production, for example. All our partners share our simplified working methods and care about the environment.
What’s in the future?
We hope to work in the future on priority issues involved in sustainable development. Currently our films are work orders, but we want to also work on short programs for television and the web.Crafty in Motion: www.craftyinmotion.com
