Pennsylvanian inventor Bill McHugh has created a series of outdoor alternative energy sculptures powered by squirrels and birds, in addition to wind, sun and hydro. The retired mechanical engineer has created numerous large-scale kinetic and natural element energy generating aluminium and steel installations as part of his Backyard in Motion series.

Ranging from 10ft (3m) diameter counter rotating wheels dubbed The Dialectic of Hegel to the bird and wind driven Avian Anerometer merry-go-round and the squirrel driven Twirl-A-Squirrel. Some sculptures are powered by the action of birds landing and feeding, sunlight and wind. McHugh spends considerable time ensuring that his designs accommodate all weather conditions while taking into consideration aerodynamics and aesthetics. All the sculptures are designed to ensure there is never any need for maintenance or lubrication.

The kinetic sculptures would make entertaining additions to nursing homes and other care facilities where people are immobile, according to McHugh, who has offered several of his stunning inventions to nursing homes.
