“I always lived under weavers and always wondered what it was like up there,” explains Porky Hefer from South African Animal Farm about the design origins for his Weaver’s Nest. “Why can’t we copy the genius of birds and lift our footprint completely off the ground?”
The result is the stunning Weaver's Nest, commissioned by Southern Guild as an art piece, which blurs the lines between art and design. The Weaver's Nest will be on display at the 2009 Johannesburg Art Fair.
Created with a mild steel frame, woven with introduced tree species and filled with thatching reed. The 3m x 2.5m nest can comfortably accommodate two adults and a small child.
The Weaver's Nest can be used for game and bird watching or just as a space to rest. Designed to be suspended from a tree and hung about 3 meters off the ground to keep you safely in the trees. Large puffy cushions make the nest livable and access is via a rope ladder that can be rolled up and stored.
“It isn’t waterproofed yet but I’m working on an overnight version with a few more creature comforts,” explains the artist.
