Tokai University's Tokai Challenger.

Japan's Tokai University's Tokai Challenger has claimed victory in Australia’s 2009 Global Green Challenge solar category. The Tokai Challenger solar car, with top speeds of 150kph (93.2mph), is equipped with Sharp compound solar cells developed for space applications. The cells have an output of 1.8 kW and a cell conversion efficiency of 30%, the highest level in the world.

The Tokai Challenger victory is the first by a Japanese team since 1996 when Honda Dream II won the event.

The solar car category of the Global Green Challenge has vehicles powered only by the sun’s energy to traverse the Australian continent, from Darwin to Adelaide, over a distance of about 3,000km (1,864 miles). Hybrid, electric, solar, low emission, and alternative energy vehicles also participate in various Global Green Challenge categories.
