The Power of One (XOF1) Solar Car is ready to travel North America’s west coast and the length of South America with a solar journey that will see the car’s driver Marcelo da Luz travel from Canada to Brazil, passing through the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay along the way.
This next leg of the journey, titled the Sol Messenger, will start in the summer of 2010 and will continue to cement da Luz’s position as the world’s record holder for the largest distances traveled by a solar car.

“It conquered ice as the first electric vehicle in the Arctic on the longest ice road in the world, now it will take on fire in South America,” explains da Luz of the next stage of his record setting journey.
Using only sunshine as fuel, XOF1 has driven extensively around North America, breaking the world distance record for a solar car. On April 10th, 2010 XOF1 conquered the greatest challenge on the planet for an electric vehicle by successfully driving on the longest continuous ice road in the world over the frozen Mackenzie River and Arctic Ocean.

XOF1 can accelerate from zero to 85kmh (50mph) in six seconds and can drive distances of 200km (130 miles) at night or 483km (300 miles) on a bright sunny day.
The XOFI and Marcelo da Luz also have the distinction of holding records for first solar car in the world to operate below freezing temperatures, first solar car in the world to drive on an ice road, first solar car to reach the Arctic Circle and first solar car to charge with the power of the midnight sun.
