Our Daily Bread is a documentary look at the European system of industrialized food production. Told without words or commentary, Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter takes the viewer to an almost apocalyptic world of food production. A place where humans have lost their humanity and connection to the food we consume. Geyrhalter shows us a Dante’s Inferno of mass-produced food.
Seemingly innocuous foods have metamorphosed into unrecognizable automation - robotically produced, bathed in pesticide, machine-raised animals, greenhouse grown vegetables and fruits. Fish are vacuumed from the sea, indoor greenhouse workers wear bio-hazard gear as they spray grapes, cows are automatically milked, olives are machine-shaked from their tree, baby chicks are thrown into a grinder, fish are gutted, de-eyed and filleted by a robot.
The only commentary is the sound of the machines, relentless and inhumane, showing without judgement how much of our food is mass-produced in industrialized settings. In Our Daily Bread the lack of reverence for food and animals that produce meat and eggs is apparent, the hypnotic machines expose our disassociation with what we consume.
Our Daily Bread is a lyrical prayer to our food system, broken and dehumanized – perhaps beyond repair.
