Denmark's first carbon neutral public building has recently been completed in Copenhagen. The Christensen & Co. Architect designed Green Lighthouse building, located at the University of Copenhagen, will operate as the new student services building for the university and serve as a ‘lighthouse’ of sustainable building options during the UN Climate Talks in Copenhagen in December.
Dubbed ‘The Sundial’ due to its cylindrical shape and adjustable façade louvers that allows light to twist around the building, following the sun. The elegant structural design reduces CO2 emissions while also operating as a natural sundial.
“If you know how to read the sun’s position in the sky, you’ll be able to tell the time from the shadow of the building” explained Michael Christensen, architect of the Green Lighthouse in a COP15 Copenhagen interview.
Heating and electricity is provided by a combination of solar energy and heat pumps. Large, heavily insulated windows allow ample light into the building while reducing the need for artificial lighting sources.
Guided tours are available by appointment.
