A slew of shark-loving celebrities have come together to show their support for the sea creatures in a new PSA (public service announcement) from The Humane Society of the United States’ Shark Free Marina Initiative (SFMI). The initiative works to reduce global shark mortality by, in part, encouraging marinas and businesses to refuse to allow the killing, landing and processing of sharks and related products.
“Sharks as monsters is a Hollywood myth designed to scare you,” explain the celebs in the video. “Killing sharks isn’t cool, it isn’t sport and it certainly isn’t culture.”
Starring Lisa Edelstein, Nigel Barker, Guy Harvey, Slash, Kelly Perine, Aria Johnson, Steve Bartkowski and Luke Tipple, the video PSA stresses the importance of sharks in maintaining healthy ocean eco-systems.
In 2008 the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration reported half a million sharks are killed for recreational purposes alone. This estimate does not include the number of sharks killed for fin soup and other product, and/or killed as by-catch.
